Term 4 Eco School Projects

The Journey towards Green Flag

In Term 4, the pupils, staff, parents and community worked on a variety of eco-projects as part of our journey towards Green Flag.

On the 4th June 2008, we had a 'Day of Eco Action'. See June's edition of the 'Bleadaire Sgoile' for more pictures and information!

WILDLIFE GARDEN IS HOME TO A VARIETY OF SPECIES

Pupils spent part of the day creating mini beast habitats, in our wildlife garden, to encourage birds and other creatures to visit.

Morven, from the Islay Natural History Trust, helped us create habitats for mini-beasts and helped us to survey the garden and find out the different kinds of insects already living there.

POND DIPPING AT BRUICHLADDICH

Primary 1-2-3 spent the afternoon pond dipping at Bruichladdich with Morven from the Islay Natural History Trust.

Pupils travelled by bus to Mr. Jackson’s house, where they explored his pond (“It was a loch” - Mrs. McLellan) for mini beasts and other water loving creatures.

To their amazement, the children found lots of different specimens and were able to use their knowledge gained from this term’s project to identify the creatures.

The children returned the mini beasts to their natural habitat before returning to school. We would like to thank Morven and Mr Jackson for all their help in organising the loch (!) dipping session.

VILLAGE AND BEACH CLEAN!

Primary 4-5-6-7 pupils collected litter and rubbish around Port Charlotte as part of the Eco Action Day.

They then helped to clean up the local beach, collecting a variety of plastic bottles, papers and metal objects.  They surveyed the types of rubbish collected and discovered that plastic (again!) was the type of rubbish they collected most!

With the help of ReJIG’s Beach Ranger, Mrs Mather, we raised £120 towards our future eco projects.

GARDENING CLUB BRIGHTEN UP THE VILLAGE

The Gardening Club sprung back into action this term, ably assisted by Mrs. MacTaggart, Mrs. MacPherson and Mr. Powell. They have been turning their attention to getting their vegetables and plants in the community garden ready for this year’s Islay and Jura Gardening Show.

They have also found time to plant a variety of plants and flowers in pots, which are to be displayed around Port Charlotte village. These are enjoyed by residents and visitors to Port Charlotte throughout the summer season.

We look forward to seeing the ‘fruits’ of their labour after the summer holidays!
