PCPS Burns Supper 2008

Primary 4-7 were given the task to organise a Burns supper on Thursday 31st January 2008. The project was designed to allow pupils to learn to:

·       Communicate clearly with others.

·       Co-operate and work as a team.

·       Find solutions to problems.

·       Read poetry clearly, in a Scots dialect, to an audience.

‘The Selkirk Grace’

We surveyed everyone to find out their preferred Scottish drink...

Most people liked Fanta or Irn-Bru!

We spoke to Mr Trussler, who ordered the drinks. Then we took drink orders on the day of the Burns supper so that everyone had a drink for the toasts.

We welcomed everyone to the first ever Port Charlotte Primary School Burns Supper.

We recited the ‘Selkirk Grace’.

‘Some hae meat an’ cannae eat,

Some wad eat that want it,

But we hae meat an’ we can eat,

And so the Lord be thankit!’

Piping In The Haggis

We wrote to Mr Shaw and asked him if he would pipe in the haggis for us!

We wrote to Mrs Mackie and Mrs MacLean to organise the haggis, neeps and tatties for our Burns supper.

We read the poem by Burns to the whole school before cutting the haggis!

‘Address To A Haggis’

By Robert Burns

Fair fa' your honest, sonsie face,
Great chieftain o' the puddin-race!
Aboon them a' ye tak your place,
Painch, tripe, or thairm:
Weel are ye wordy of a grace
As lang's my arm.

The groaning trencher there ye fill,
Your hudies like a distant hill,
Your pin wad help to mend a mill
In time o' need,
While thro' your pores the dews distil
Like amber bead.

His knife see rustic Labour dight,
An' cut ye up wi' ready slight,
Trenching your gushing entrails bright,
Like onie ditch;
And then, O what a glorious sight,
Warm-reeking, rich!
