Eco Projects in Primary 4-7

PUPILS PLANT POTS FOR PORT CHARLOTTE VILLAGE

As an Eco-School who pride themselves on the three ‘Rs’ (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle), pupils were overjoyed with a recent delivery of plants from Argyll and Bute Council.

The delivery occurred as the result of a letter written by James. Last session, James had contacted Argyll and Bute Council to ask for help and assistance with our school grounds project. As a result, we were gifted a willow tree, and promised that when bedding plants were lifted from public gardens, they could be given to pupils to use in the school garden.

We were keen that we reuse the plants in a way that would benefit as many people as possible. Therefore, we decided to plant the gifted plants in the Gardening Club tubs, which are situated around Port Charlotte. Of course, the plant tubs are re-used animal feed tubs from local farms, so we are re-using on two fronts!  James explains the re-planting process below:

‘First, we took all the weeds out of the pots and tipped the weeds into a barrow. Next, we took the old soil out and replaced it with new compost. After that, we put new plants in the tubs. Finally, we emptied the old compost and weeds into the compost bin.’

ENERGY WATCH BEGINS!!!

After the summer holidays, Primary 4-7 were given class responsibilities. One of the Primary 4-5 responsibilities was energy monitors.

This job involves taking the electricity reading and recording the number on the clip board every Monday morning. We are trying to find out how much electricity the school uses each week, before we plan how to save energy next term.

I asked P4/5 some questions about what it’s like being an energy monitor. Here are some quotes from P4/5. Sarah said ‘It helps the school save energy’. Jamie made an interesting proposal, ‘We could buy automatic lights that come on straight away when you go into a classroom’. Alexander advised us to ‘Switch off all the lights and the computers when you don’t need them on’.

We enjoyed our energy workshop with Karen from AliEnergy (see photograph). It helped us think of different ways that we could use less energy in school.
