PCPS Awarded Silver Eco School Award!

We are extremely proud to announce that we have been awarded the Eco-Schools silver award!

The award arrived just three days before the Christmas holidays,  an early present that thrilled everyone!

The project, coordinated  by Mrs. M. McLellan and Mrs. H. McLellan, has flourished since January 2006, with pupils, staff and parents working together to improve the impact of the school on the environment.

A number of improvements have been planned and implemented based on the three ‘Rs’ (reduce, reuse and recycle), with each class being given an area of responsibility.

Primary 1-3 have been ensuring that the school and its grounds remain litter free. They have designed posters and carry out daily litter collections after break times.

Primary 4-7 have been focusing on energy use. They have been carrying out weekly electricity readings to monitor the amount of electricity used. Senior pupils are also responsible for monitoring light use and ensuring that power points are switched off when not in use. We learned a lot from their workshop with Louise from Ali-Energy before Christmas, resulting lots of new ideas on how to reduce the school’s consumption of electricity. We are now going to monitor temperatures around the school, to ensure that our heaters are not too high and keep the school at 19°C.

Pre-5 pupils have been focusing on waste minimization, and have been finding new and exciting ways of reusing items in and around school.

We would like to thank everyone who has helped us with our Eco-Schools projects since last January. Whether you have made monetary donations, given us helpful advice or donated things we needed, we’d like to say a huge thank you to you all!

We have been nominated for the ‘BT Greener Schools Award’, part of the 2008 Scottish Education Awards organised by the Daily Record and Learning and Teaching Scotland. The nomination comes in recognition of the excellent work pupils, parents, staff and the community has been engaged in during the last year.

We’re keeping our fingers (and toes) crossed, and hope to hear some news towards the end on March!
